Your child will begin the year learning to read phonograms, soon progressing to spelling words, and before you know it, he will be reading short stories! LPL’s goals for kindergarten reading are fluency and reading comprehension.

Lesson Plan Ladies have selected Fun with Pets as our beginning reader for several reasons: it is written on an appropriate level, it is an engaging storybook containing stories of what every child loves—pets, and it is a gentle introduction into reading words in context. Your child will greatly benefit from this engaging and age-appropriate text! For those that complete this book ahead of schedule, we also recommend, buying or downloading McGuffey’s Eclectic Primer, Revised Edition published by John Wiley and Sons.

*During the first semester, kindergarten reading consists of reading phonograms and spelling words from the LPL Kindergarten Phonics and Spelling Lesson Plans then reading words in context the second semester. For this reason, LPL Kindergarten Reading Lesson Plans are designed to be taught the second semester which lasts for 18 weeks.
