Young children are naturally inquisitive. In order to maintain this creativity, LPL believe it is imperative that such curiosity be fostered throughout the early school years. Curiosity, combined with natural, scientific events, can motivate them to ask the following questions: Why? What? When? and How? It is this process which allows them to gather information and knowledge.

During first grade, your child will explore biology and botany. Science will be divided as follows: 20 weeks of animal study, 10 weeks of human body lessons, and 6 weeks of plant study.

We have formed our LPL First Grade Science Plans from the following books: The Usborne Children's Encyclopedia, My Body, and Green Thumbs. LPL also highly recommend, but do not require, the Insect Lore Butterfly Garden.

The Usborne Children’s Encyclopedia does an excellent job of nourishing curious minds through enjoyable pictures, photographs, and information that exposes children to botany, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, meteorology, aeronautics, and history. The jam-packed text is written on an early elementary level, designed for easy understanding. Your child will adore LPL’s choice for a high-quality science spine.

My Body includes fascinating information about different body systems along with detailed coloring pages. Your child will have a great time learning about, coloring, cutting out, and gluing the life-size organs onto his life-size body cutout. What fun!

The book, Green Thumbs, contains activities that will inspire your young gardener to love planting and growing. In it, you will find many hands-on, age-appropriate planting activities for children desiring to learn about plants and how to care for them.

Insect Lore Butterfly Garden is a butterfly oasis! With the purchase of this kit, you will receive a certificate for five caterpillars to be sent to your door. When they arrive, you will be fascinated to watch the caterpillars grow, form chrysalides, and eventually become butterflies! Food and all supplies are included with this kit. Your child will be amazed to watch this wonderful transformation up close.
